If you haven’t been following Selena Gomez and The Weeknd closely enough to know that they have reportedly leveled up in their relationship, don’t worry: an army of Internet conspiracy theorists are on top of it.
The two stars are currently making headlines for reaching a major milestone: they followed each other on Instagram. Why is that a milestone? The modern social-media driven celebrity culture has turned huge groups of people into conspiracy theorists, assigning meaning to the smallest of digital moves. Gomez and the Weeknd have already crossed several major thresholds, including the grainy paparazzi shots of them together, the immediate check to see how one or both of their exes react (Bella Hadid enters the story here), and then the report that the new couple is heating up, including quotes from insiders and anonymous sources saying things like, “He really likes her. They text every day.”
Now they are fully in the social-media stage, with the celebrity trackers who watched carefully to see if they followed each other on Instagram now rewarded for their diligence. Please don’t confuse this with becoming “Instagram official,” which means they’ve posted photos of the other one on their personal Instagram accounts. Some outlets want to rush Gomez and The Weeknd along, but they’re not quite at that public declaration of love via social-media photographs yet.
Stars might want to consider following most other stars in their peer group from the start if they want to be discreet should they ever couple up, but what fun would that be in a world where the media reports on their every follower added and dropped? If Gomez and The Weeknd do decide to become “Instagram official,” the next step is an official red-carpet appearance. That will then be followed by more intense paparazzi stalking than usual; get ready for a Daily Mail photo or 47 of them walking together holding hands.
Gomez and The Weeknd have not confirmed their relationship (Vanity Fair has reached out to both for comment); however, they are 100% hot and heavy, per the media and the members of the public who scrutinize every inch of these couplings like they’re Sherlock Holmes.
